Wells (1866 1946) wrote thrilling adventures about time travel, space exploration, alien invasion, and scientific experiments gone awry. One of Wells's most popular stories, it offers both a serious study of egotism as well as a first-rate science-fiction thriller. In addition to these 17 short stories, this anthology features the novel The Invisible Man in its entirety. The story revolves around Griffin, a scientist who discovers the serum of. But the one that had lured us down Swanston Street was the iconic first edition, with its famous blue cover, fortuitously acquired by the SLV in 1922. We examined some special books, including lavish editions of Ulysses: the 1935 Limited Editions Club edition, with Matisse’s accompanying etchings the 1988 Arion Press edition, with illustrations by Robert Motherwell – and various others. As the protagonist, Santiago sets out on his journey, he encounters various obstacles and learns important life lessons along the way. One of the key themes in the book is the idea of following one’s personal legend or destiny. While the book has gained a cult following, it did not appeal to me, and I found it to be a rather average read. When my brother gifted it to me, I was filled with anticipation and excitement, hoping that it would be a life-changing read. In the case of ‘The Alchemist,’ I had heard so much about it and had been curious for a long time. It’s almost as if the book chooses us, rather than the other way around. Charging me a premium just because they can. Collections like this one just make me mad. That makes the TPB a small savings (80¢/issue) over the floppies. Compare that to Defenders Beyond TPB which came out within a week or two of this book - 5 issues ($3.99 cover price) of new content PLUS old material for the same $15.99USD cover price. Which is $5.33/issue - more than cover price! (Which, for the record, was $3.99/issue). Nothing wrong with any of them, and they're enjoyable reads, but part of my lower rating is an economic one - I despise when Marvel throws 3 issues into a trade and then pads it with old, semi-relevant, stories to justify the $15.99USD pricetag. A solid set of 3 oneshots detailing (and mildly retconning) important dates and events from Eternals history. ![]() |
